THE BETTER HALF
A NOVEL OF THE NEVADA DIVORCE RANCH ERA
1952. Chicago socialite Elizabeth “Bettye” Grafton flees her abusive husband for a Nevada divorce. She holes up on a gritty-glamorous Reno dude ranch at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. At the Rocking B Ranch in the beautiful Washoe Valley, she endures the state’s six-week residency in a menagerie of wealthy ex-wives-in-waiting. By day, she finds solace riding the High Sierra—and by night, in a bottomless bottle of bourbon, and a stack of books. But she’s back in the land she left behind as an Indian School runaway, and the past is not done with her. Nor are her powerful husband and his Las Vegas mob cronies. Just days before her divorce hearing, a shocking reunion reveals her identity to exactly the wrong people—and a desperate Bettye must put her trust in unlikely new allies. Together they concoct an audacious scheme to win her freedom—one that may also enable her to reclaim her shattered family.
THE DEBUT NOVEL BY P.W. BORGMAN
Jen Carrigan, a young Silicon Valley professional, has lost seemingly everything: her marriage, job, and now her home. So when she learns about an abandoned mansion in the Santa Cruz Mountains, she packs up her dog and becomes a squatter. A harrowing encounter while trespassing turns into an unexpected friendship with a solitary neighbor, who has his own dark history with the house. As Jen searches for refuge, she's drawn into a tumultuous reunion with the family that pushed her away as a teen. But just as she begins rebuilding her world, the mansion delivers a final, devastating surprise.
